Hold onto your hard drives, folks, because Ukraine is the stage for a thrilling crypto saga! The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has just cracked the case of an illicit crypto mining farm lurking within a state-owned enterprise in Lviv's Western region.
According to the SBI, the secret operation was run by cunning managers from the Forests of Ukraine company branch in Rava-Ruske. This town, nestled near the Polish border, became the epicenter of an audacious crypto mining scheme.
Unleashing their mining prowess, the masterminds behind the farm minted a staggering $108,000 in cryptocurrencies. But that's not all—the audacity didn't stop there. They shamelessly siphoned $41,000 worth of government resources, including electricity from the public grid.
The SBI discovered that the branch's former director, who now leads another branch, conspired with the current director—a former deputy to the ousted chief—to set up this covert operation. Adding to the intrigue, the branch's chief accountant and other accomplices played a crucial role in bringing this scheme to life. For over a year, the illicit farm operated in the shadows, with the conspirators storing their ill-gotten gains in carefully crafted personal crypto wallets. To add insult to injury, they audaciously had the enterprise's accounts foot the electricity bills, further depleting government resources.
But how did the authorities crack the case? They began to unravel the mystery when they noticed suspicious power surges, blackouts, and disruptions in the regional power networks. It was a clue that something wicked was draining the energy grid and causing chaos.
Armed with warrants and determination, officers stormed the premises, seizing a treasure trove of incriminating evidence. Flash drives, computers, laptops, mobile phones, video cards, power equipment, motherboards, processors, hard drives, cooling equipment, and servers—all confiscated to expose the full extent of their operation. The confiscated equipment alone was valued at a staggering $81,000.
The alleged masterminds behind this audacious crypto caper have been apprehended and charged with embezzlement of state property.
